With over 25 years in international forestry, FSC has grown into the most trusted organisation in forest certification. Each system-wide decision to improve the livelihood of these ecosystems is democratically lead by economic, social, and environmental experts. 75,000 organisations worldwide hold the FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification, promising supply chain integrity end-to-end. As FSC’s platform continues to expand, top brands and global NGOs look to support the movement in restoring forests and establish more sustainable sourcing protocols. These efforts are just as significant in the textile industry specifically, where FSC has been working to develop certified textile supply chains since 2015. Both brands and manufacturers can take part in the change by bearing the FSC label, recognisable by 56% of consumers worldwide. Involvement not only ensures sustainable sourcing practices are followed, but forests are being protected for all, forever.

  • In pursuit of circularity

As the world transitions towards a carbon free economy, the demand for renewable materials—namely forest products—will increase dramatically in the coming decades. The effect will put even more pressure on the world’s forests.

Find out how FSC supports circularity —>

  • Circularity: “Gradually decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources and designing waste out of the system”

    — Ellen McArthur Foundation

Full adoption of a circular economy is critical. While the transition is underway, certifying forest-based materials is one of the key actions that the fashion sector can take today to protect forests.

  • FSC & Circularity

FSC’s certification system is aligned with circularity in two ways: the FSC Forest Management Standard principles ensure that there is no net loss of forest over time, allowing the forest to regenerate and protect biodiversity. Secondly, the FSC Recycled label helps keep materials in use and reduce waste thereby alleviating the pressure on forests.

  • FSC Recycled

In 2004, FSC introduced the FSC Recycled label to reduce pressure on forests by extending the life span of fibers. Seeing this label on a product assures that the forest-based materials that went into them are 100% pre and post-consumer reclaimed. This means that materials like cardboard, sawdust and even textile scraps are given a new purpose while reducing the amount of waste going into landfills or incinerators.
